Why “Sambani”:
“Sambani” means “djembe” in Susu, a language from Guinea, West Africa. The actual spelling and pronunciation is not definitive. The spirit of the djembe drum is with me every day, through my music practice and through my professional work with Sambani Build. I named my company in tribute to a tradition that is very close to my heart.
About 20 years ago, I saw a benefit concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with music and dance from Guinea. I was instantly moved by this tradition that I had never experienced before. I met and began taking drum lessons, and I loved it so much that I started taking trips to Guinea to study the music at its source. I ended up going for three years in a row. My life changed drastically from these experiences of seeing and feeling this culture, and relating how privileged my life is compared to much of the rest of the planet.
Over the years, I have had to come to some understanding of my role as a white-identified person playing rhythms from West Africa. I have wrestled with questions of appropriation, and I find no easy answers. I seek to honor this beautiful music from a humble place. The teachers that I have had the privilege to study with in Guinea have given me their blessings to share these traditions. I offer my deep respect and gratitude to these teachers: Bolokada Conde, Sekou Conde, Ousmane Camara, Ousmane Sylla,Abass Camara, Manimou Camara, Mylla Sylla, Mbemba Bangoura, and others.
